Field Hockey Falls To Colgate, 2-0

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Colgate scored two goals in the first 30 minutes of play and held on for a 2-0 non-league victory over host West Chester Saturday afternoon at South Campus' Turf Field.

West Chester (3-5) held decided advantages in both shots and penalty corners, but could not capitalize as Colgate (5-4) rode the fine play of goalkeeper Sarah Pederson to the win. It marked the first time in four tries that the Raiders defeated the Rams since the series began in 2004.

The Golden Rams outshot the visiting Raiders, 17-7, mainly on the strength of West Chester's 13-4 edge in penalty corners. However, Pederson recorded 11 saves and her defense came up big twice, stopping shots designated for the far post on two separate corner opportunities.

Colgate's Lauren Carey, twice, knocked down shots lifted over a sprauling Pederson off a corner opportunity to preserve the shutout and frustrate West Chester. Carey also notched the second goal of the tilt in the 29th minute, off an assist from Laura Denenga, for her fifth tally of the year.

Amanda Gilmore gave the Raiders an early lead with her first goal of the season just three minutes into the contest.

West Chester's Shelly Brooks registered nine shots on the afternoon, mostly off of the Golden Rams' corner chances.

Joelle Zarefoss recorded three saves in goal for West Chester.

The Golden Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Villanova for another non-league tilt at 4 p.m.
